In today’s fast-paced world, mental health concerns can easily be overlooked. For teens, changes in behavior are often mistaken for typical mood swings, and for adults, stress is frequently dismissed as part of daily life. However, regardless of age, certain signs may indicate that a professional evaluation could be helpful. Here’s what to watch for:
- Frequent anger or aggressive outbursts
- Engaging in risky or impulsive behaviors
- Feeling afraid to be around others, even close family
- Losing interest in activities once found enjoyable
- Developing mistrust toward people they normally relied on
- Experiencing panic attacks
- Persistent restlessness or agitation
- Sense of guilt or unworthiness
- Significant weight loss and lack of appetite
- Sleeplessness
- Struggling to work, parent, or keep up at home
- Unable to focus
- Unable to handle stress with normal coping strategies
- Using drugs or alcohol to cope
Helpful Tips for Talking About Mental Health
Starting a conversation about mental health can feel uncomfortable, but the following tips can help make it easier to open up and begin the discussion:
- I’m worried about you. Can we talk about what you are going through? If not, is there anyone you’d be comfortable having a discussion with?
- How can I help you discuss these issues with your parents or other trusted person who is responsible and cares about you?
- What can I help you with? Chores? Laundry? Dinner? Babysitting?
- I care about you and want to listen. What do you want me to know about how you feel?
- Can you think of anyone or anything that has helped you cope with similar situations in the past?
- Sometimes just talking with somebody else who has gone through a similar experience helps. Do you know anyone who has had a similar experience?
- It seems like you are having a hard time. How can I help you to find help?
- I’m concerned for your safety. Have you thought about harming yourself or anyone else?
